Phillip Torrone wrote a post on Metroblogging SF about laptop thieves hitting SF. The two articles it links to are very scary. I can understand getting your laptop jacked if you leave it and go to the bathroom, but getting STABBED as you sit there in a coffee shop?! That’s really insane. The only thing I can think to deter thieves is to lock your laptop to the table or something. If they can see that it’s not going anywhere, then maybe they won’t make an attempt to steal it. Be careful out there!
Update: News.com has an article about what you can do to protect your laptop.

Jeez, I really don’t like the sound of that. I have a few laptop locks and stuff, but to be honest, I never use them.
But that’s just nasty; I mean thief’s STABBING people. I would just give them the notebook (while crying like a girl (no offence to girls of course)) as at the end of the day, the data is backed up and the hardware is insured.
note to self…keep laptop at home
note to self - don’t lock laptop to person, they might just steal that as well.
That’s what stap-ons are for, Girl. -Strap notebook on back, enter ladies room. Do Business. Wash Hands.
Give evil eye to all looking at you. Now, scan bar for the right “type” (No pun intended (yeah, right) >
You know what, the whole world friggin’ sucks. It is so darn sad that you can not take a notebook out without the risk of someone stealing it.
You know this makes me sooo pissed off. My computing teacher was the same at school asking why I risk bringing my notebook to school everyday. You should be “free to roam” (hey, I should be in marketing with phrases like that!)
Like is this a reflection on our times, people stabbing people for something that will only fetch about $100. In the UK, the average price of a stolen notebook is £50. My £2000 notebook being stolen for £50, worse, a man health and life put at risk for that little. What has the world come to?
Grrr!
I called up the IT folk at my dad’s company and asked what options were available for securing computers, and they more or less said, forget about physical security - just make your computer really undesirable. Big asset tags on it are a bit turn off for thieves I’m told.
Veronica, you have me really fired up tonight!
Hi Veronica, I don’t know if you have the time, but if you do you can read this comment.
I’m from Brazil, and just like any 3rd world country this one is waaaaaay messed up. I always lived in São Paulo here, is the biggest city of South America and the 3rd biggest city of the world. It’s not like Rio or the Amazon (since I think most of people know those places), it’s more like New York, or Boston, a bussiness city.
Well the laptop thieves here are a very, very big problem. Last year the police caught a huge gang with over 40 people, they were divided in 4 citys and 3 countrys. But those kind of activities didn’t stop.
There’s a place here that is like the south american Wall Street, it’s a nice place and the best one to be stolen… Things were so crazy there in 2004, that the police installed booths in almost every block, so no one would have their laptops and notebooks stolen. BUT, the thieves started to steal people around the region. That area is very busy everyday so you have to park you car in streets close to it, and that’s where the thieves attack.
Being stabbed for 100 bucks really sucks, but the worst is that sometimes I watch in the news that people weren’t only robbed, or stabbed, but actually killed… It’s a very sad thing, maybe more commom in poor places like here. I’ve never been stabbed or shoot, but I was robbed 4 times already, and one time only I had the chance to defend myself
As a “tip”, all I have to say is: As bad as those things might be, you have to keep in mind that it might happen, so make sure you have some backup of the data you’re carring somewhere, and if you actually find yourself in a situation like that keep it cool, handle everything they want, it’s better to give away 1000 bucks for a thief than your life.
Take care everybody, sorry for some grammar mistakes
i like brazil
This is a fabulous idea that utilizes Mac’s hard drive stabilization hardware.
