OK, so it’s my router that hates me, not the Internet. For some unknown reason, the damn thing has been on the fritz for the past week. I have to reset it a couple of times a day just for it to work! I tried unplugging it, switching the ports, upgrading the firmware… nothing. I get pockets of activity, and then when I leave it unattended it farts out again. I had all of these wonderful plans to play WoW all weekend, and that got shot to hell.
So the big question on everyone’s mind lately has been “which cell phone is Veronica going to get?” I’m sure it keeps you up at night, right? Right. I’m thinking the Sidekick III might be it. It’s slim and sexy, and it has lots of goodies packed into it. I have to get over my fear of owning something with such a notorious reputation (hello, Paris) but I think I can deal.
In the meantime, anyone have any suggestions?

I’m sorry that you ‘broke the Internet’.
So cellphone time, do you really need a new one? The Sidekick looks scary and not very sexy. I dunno, get a Nokia!
Blackberry if you love email, the sidekick looks pretty good, I haven’t had a chance to use one, it it all its cracked up to be?
i would suggest you check out the Nokia E61…Blackberry stile nokia!! so cool! and with WLAN, 3G and Quadband
Veronica,
Buy a new router and pack up playing wow……
love ya
hey veronica…for routers, get a linksys wifi-g router that can be reflashed to linux (wrt54gl i think)…as for a phone, the treo is your friend.
-ttyl!
that’s the router i have. apparently it’s a piece of crap.
Hmmm… The WRT54G is not a piece of crap, at least not the earlier versions. I dunno about the ver 5 hardware though… Maybe just try to get your hands on an old one… Google can tell you what to look for
As for the cell, I agree, Treo is ithe way to go
I still have a spare router lying ’round my apartment you can have, or at least use until you get yours fixed. ‘Course, I haven’t tested this one since I picked it up, so it could just lead to more fun frustration.
I have some version of the WRT54G, too, and I put the DD-WRT one on it. (even though it’s all Linuxy and weird behind the scenes, the web interface on DD-WRT is actually pretty tidy and easy to set up.) I haven’t had problems yet.
Unless an hour or two of your time is worth more than the $60 or so for a new router, I suggest that if your router is the right version, you should try out one of the firmwares on the Wikipedia page for it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G My girlfriend’s router recently got half-fixed by a firmware upgrade we did, so I’d imagine replacing the whole type of firmware would probably fix a dying router entirely!
I love my Sidekick2. I love my 8125. Maybe the sidekick 3 will be the best of both worlds….although T-mob’s service as of late has sucked ass and having a phone take up my whole front pocket has been getting on my nerves. Thank god for sim cards. What happened to your tmobile 8125?

Hi V.
Was at the British Grand Prix this weekend and there was a stand (in a corp. area) for these guys:

The phone as stupid money and don’t have any special functionality, but the do a diamond encrusted on if you wanted something along the Paris Hilton theme!!!
Andrew.
if you’re gonna get a new router, why not check out the 802.11N? I would say pre-N, but I’ve noticed products that don’t describe themselves as pre-anything… the range and connection are supposed to be great, I’m assuming that’s if you’re using a G card, too. Dvorak and Leo Laporte are always raving about them.
That’s funny, for me, it’s my ISP that hates me. Just this Saturday I woke up to no internet and the phone company won’t get to me until the end of day TUESDAY.
If you’re not going to use the Sidekick III like Paris does, I’m pretty sure you’ll be ok with it.
That is so weird! My Linksys wrt54g was on the fritz all last week also! We ended up buting a new one. Weird!
Your internet issue sounds eerily like the same issue I have. Source of issue is wifi traffic that is stronger than your signal. Probably from someone that is ussing a hacked WRT54g. a download of netstumbler can tell you if this is the case. I tried getting a WRT54g and hacking it myself to start a wifi arms race. That worked OK bu there were still area in my condo that my nemesis overpowered me. What worked better was belkin pre-N router and using a channel far away from the offending AP. Hope it helps

mine did the same thing - telling me briefly that my network cable was unplugged and then the connection died, upon which I had to restart the modem and/or router. This, interestingly enough, happened whenever I visited a rottentomatoe page…haven’t done so after the 5th time it did it and my connection is fine..
You might have long ago fixed your router issue but since I had the same problem I thought I would throw in my two cents. I too have a Linksys WRT54G router and they are actually good not crap. What firmware do you have on it? Linksys or a 4rd party? What AV program are you running? Trend Micro by chance?
I fixed by issues but I’m not sure how because I changes so many things around that I wasn’t able to isolate which issue was the actual problem. So some things to look at.
1. BIOS might be controlling your NIC via power management.
2. Windows might be shutting it off via power management.
3. DD-WRT firmware version .23 was really buggy for me.
4. I always seem to get this problem about the time I was using a torrent client. My IDS told me I was getting ping attacks and SQL injections from Chinese IP address’s. Not sure if it was related directly but thought it odd every time I was down my last log showed attacks.
I dunno just some thing to check out. I know use an old P2 box as a firewall box. But for the last few months with my Linksys I had no issues. Personally I think it was the 40+ hard resets and firmware flashes I did on it that fixed it. Maybe a corrupt filesystem or something.
