Dreamhost isn't the best hosting company in the world, but I admit I do use them. For the price, you can't beat the features. If there were any good local companies I would think about switching, but here in Little Rhody, I've discovered they're still in 1995 when it comes to technology.

As an example, I work for Brown University (we who use AS/400s and dial-up modems, hehe), and part of our campus used a local hosting provider for a small bookstore website... who was charging us $30 per month for under 1Gb of space, and wouldn't even let us set up PHP5. No bandwidth either. I can't justify that cost for a company that isn't even all that good (no control panel? are you kidding me?).

LS seems awesome though... if I ever move to SF, I'm there.

(wow this comment was long...)

Really? Hmm.. Yea our local host sucks actually and it is expensive. Well if my website gets as popular as yours then I will have to do that... right now I only have about 100 subscribers or so.. but only about 60 confirmed from my website... I have good and bad things about dreamhost too , it just seemed you get more bang for your buck...

no, i don't get free hosting.
1. i like to support local businesses, which Laughing Squid is.
2. i prefer the flexibility that comes with having your own domain, as opposed to a blogger account (i used to have musicmedicine.blogspot.com)

i've heard not-so-wonderful things about Dreamhost.

oh ok.. I just see at the bottom of the website that it was designed by someone for wordpress.. So I assumed you used wordpress.. hope you are doing ok..
I have been thinking about using http://www.dreamhost.com/

But.. blogger is free. and so is everything else that I use. So why don't u just use other things for free..?? or I may just guess you have the hook up

John: That's actually quite interesting - using a host that's physically located in a community where they take an active role in their members and their endeavors.

I'd like to hear more if anyone has more information. I see that they have discounted "starving artist" plans, which is also quite cool.

To keep costs down, I split the plan I use with a few friends. They have so many domains allowed and unlimited disk space, so there's way more resources to go around than we can use up. So for $100 I have an unlimited disk space host for 2 years.

I could be wrong, Rich, but I think the reason Laughing Squid is popular is because it promotes an arts-and-culture community among its clients. There isn't anything comparable to it where I live, but from what little I've seen (a blog post here and their website), it's pretty intense.

Veronica, DNS seemed to propagate here to NY.

What were your requirements picking a host? Though they seem like a cool company, their plans (only 500MB for $12-$14/mo!) seem a bit anemic. Are they offering something other hosts don't that I'm not seeing?

I looked at CNet's list of hosting providers when choosing mine and ended up on IX Web Hosting. They've been great for the year I've had them and I get unlimited disk space 2,000GB transfer, a ton of domains if I want them, and all the LAMP packages to run blogs and wikis and all that for $13/mo.

That said, I might be missing out on something great at Laughing Squid - they seem to be getting more popular. Do they give you shell access?

Oh wow, iiNet (my internet provider here in Australia) actually recognises DNS propagation and change quickly for once! When my host switched servers, it took more than 3 weeks for my ISP to pick it up. Anyway, I don't see any problems here.
