Today I went with News.com to visit Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic. Like I mentioned in my last post, this was an incredible chance to meet people who’ve created and worked on some of my favorite movies, including Willow, Star Trek (First Contact and Generations), Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars… need I go on? I was honored to meet Hal Hickle (Animation Supervisor) and John Knoll (Visual Effects Supervisor) who are both Oscar-nominated for their work on Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest. They’re in crunch time right now working on the third movie, which is due at the end of spring. But that’s not all! I also met Michael Sanders, who showed me the ins and outs of the motion capture process (see pajamas here). I’m hoping sometime I can get back in there and actually try making an animation myself!
Well, as you can see I took a lot of photos. Daniel Terdiman, who’ll be writing up the articles for News.com, also took about 200 pictures. I’ll link to those image galleries and my own videos when they’re published.

Wow, that’s pretty damn amazing. I didn’t realize so many movies were branched out from Lucasfilm, but I s’pose you can’t expect them to not do anything besides Star Wars. Awesome photos as well, those mo-cap suits look snazzy as does that anime-esque Yoda.
the Yoda fountain was awesome. I laughed at myself for admiring the Cat5 cables on their servers.
Nice one, I am soooo jealous.
The render servers make me drool for that sort of power, and the models on display are amazing. Brings back some good memories of times enjoying those movies.
Thanks for sharing
I’m not sure which is cooler, just the fact that you got to go to ILM or that you got to go to ILM and TAKE PICTURES!!!
Thanks for sharing your collection!

V can you please do the same at Blizzard!!!
No fair! I took a tour of ILM back in October at AES, and they said we couldn’t take any pictures whilst inside the building. Oh well, I can relive the joy by looking through yours…
very cool veronica! I went to the lucas ranch one time for lunch… it was near ewok lake. There was no cell phone reception. My friend James works on video games there… but what you saw was far better. Yes!
Frikkin’ Sweet! @Eric F. - I did the same thing.
I probably would wave tried to take that R2D2 off the desk, so I guess it’s good that I can’t go. BTW, how many times did you hear the Imperial theme?
[...] Remember when I went to Industrial Light & Magic? Well, John Knoll and Hal Hickle won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects! It was bizarre to be watching the show at home, and see someone I’ve met on stage accepting an award. We went back to ILM today for their surprise welcome party, and it was really fantastic to see. Here’s the video we shot for News.com; there should be some photos tomorrow as well on the site (I’ll post them here). Sorry for the crappy screengrab, I left my camera at home. [...]
