Remember when I went to Industrial Light & Magic? Well, John Knoll and Hal Hickle won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects! It was bizarre to be watching the show at home, and see someone I’ve met on stage accepting an award. We went back to ILM today for their surprise welcome party, and it was really fantastic to see. Here’s the video we shot for News.com; there should be some photos tomorrow as well on the site (I’ll post them here). Sorry for the crappy screengrab, I left my camera at home.

One of my goals in life is to present Oscars to the little people… the people who I’ve learned do all the real magic in Hollywood like making George Clooney and Tom Cruise look tall, working for hours on end rotoscoping sticks to make lightsabers, etc. Since working on our show, I’ve learned that these people deserve more credit for their hard work…
I still remember when Kaka started to play professional soccer. I used to play with him when I was 15, 16 and 3 years later he was playing the World Cup, pretty amazing…
For a bit more background info on John Knoll, you can listen to TWiM episode #38 at time index 52:56.
Btw, way to ‘work the eyepatch’ Veronica.
Knoll deserves so many accolades, and the rest of the team did a stellar job as well. ILM in general is such a powerhouse of talent it is stunning. If only they would move to the Southeast… rent is cheaper!
Great video!
