One of the most vexing and annoying problems with the iPhone is the recessed headphone jack. My Ultimate Ears don’t fit, my old Sony headphones don’t either, so the only option for me right now are the included iPhone earbuds. And well, doubly annoying is the fact that those particular earbuds hurt like hell.
There’s the V-Moda set that you can buy at the Apple store (UPDATE: they do not have the answering features, only a mic! LAME which also have the call answering function–I expect that a ton of other brands will jump on this, such as the upcoming pair from Shure) which look nice, but they’re $100. Then there’s the Belkin iPhone headphone adapter, the “peripheral no one wants, but many will need.” Essentially, ugly and not very flexible.
Yet today on my Flickr stream, I saw another innovative solution discovered by Tristan Tom (maybe he wasn’t the first, but the first I’ve heard of!). He cleverly remembered that the iPod Shuffle Sport Case comes with an adapter, that also happens to work perfectly for the iPhone. Another upshot is that it at least it looks Apple-like, and has some flexibility to it. The downside is that you have to buy the Shuffle Sport Case (eBay has them), which seems pretty dumb if you don’t have a Shuffle. Or if you don’t exercise.
If only Apple would sell this accessory separately! I’ve actually considered going through the process of either stripping some of the plastic covering from around the plug of my Ultimate Ears, or possibly re-wiring the iPhone cable with some new earbuds. This Shuffle adapter would be a much less painful way of using my favorite headphones again.

Thanks Veronica! I just ordered one from E-bay. $6 is but a small price to pay to get rid of that horrid Belkin thing.
The Griffin version should be nice if it ever comes out. http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/headphoneadapter/ I can’t even imagine the design discussion that occurred when they decided to make the Belkin adapter. That thing is totally rediculous.
This is a great find! I have the Belkin adapter but it so ugly I never took it out of the box and have been on the verge of returning it for sometime. Looks like I’ll return it shortly.
I am currently using the Belkin adapter and hate it. Then I see this and think – “my wife has the shuffle case”! And sure enough she kept the adapter. THANK YOU VERONICA!
Veronica, you might find this helpful. I did this in about 30 seconds to my Bose QC2 headphone jack….it was brilliant, and no adapters at all. Let me know if it works for you.

p.s. Obviously, not every headphone jack is a candidate for this modification, but so far I’ve done this on two jacks and both work great on the iPhone.
Face it, V, Molly was right. The iPhone is a turd and those who buy it are sheep.
@Mark – I’m a sheep? You know, for all it’s problems, it’s still a better phone than any other I’ve used. If liking it makes me a sheep, then I guess lamb chops are for dinner!
Same here, Mark…until you used it on a daily basis, you have no idea what you’re talking about. I’ve been through the Treos (3 of them they are so cheap), Blackberry 8700 & 8800, and they do not compare. Yes, there are things to improve, but its not just hype….its a better phone than I have ever used before, too.
@Veronica – The point is that for $600, you shouldn’t have to put up with this ****. Why would a company praised for its design make such a blunder?
You bought this thing to take your music with you. And it won’t even let you listen without going through hell.
Josh, if you consider buying a $5.00 adapter ‘hell’ then you must lived quite a privileged life. And no, Apple should not have sacrificed the cool sleek design of the iPhone case just in order to make the headphone jack not be recessed.
The problem is so easily solved with this and other adapter wires that it’s not really that big of a deal. Especially considering that all Apple iPod earbuds work as is with the iPhone. Apple really only has an obligation to support their own stuff, which they clearly do.
My whole beef with the iPhone is that it’s nothing like their other products (except for it’s looks). Apple always prides themselves on making user-friendly, innovative, “whole package” type products, and the iPhone is none of these in comparison to other Apple products.
In my experience, Apple products do everything that I get frustrated at Microsoft for not doing, now the iPhone comes out and is completely counter-intuitive to the Apple reputation.
Veronica dear,
Now that you’ve played with the iphone for a week or so, can you give us a review? I guess what I’m really curious about are: Phone quality-How is it as a phone (call quality and ease of use finding contacts/dialing).
And battery life-is it lasting a full day on one charge?
Inquiring minds want to know…
“Apple always prides themselves on making user-friendly, innovative, “whole package” type products, and the iPhone is none of these in comparison to other Apple products.”
I respectfully disagree with you about your statement that the iPhone is neither user-friendly nor innovative. In my experience, it is both of those things, in leaps and bounds.
As for the “whole package,” I guess that really depends on who you are. If you need a real workhorse (e-mail syncing, for example), a Treo is probably more your style. But for using the Internet, (yes, even on EDGE) making calls, and listening to music (among other things) then this phone is going to be great for a lot of people. Myself included.
Vero I just read that a “mild” earthquake hit San Francisco metropolitan area. I hope you and everyone is ok. Please let us know that you are. Take care.
Hey Ron,
Last day at CNET TV???? Where can we see you now???
Will miss your shows for sure??
Take care sweets
V, I realize that my attack of “sheep” was just me lashing out at you in anger that you’re leaving CNet. For that I am sorry. This is how I grieve! DAMN YOU!
The V-MODA iPhone headphones have a mic, but no call answering button…
same goes for the $100 Shures that are currently selling in AT&T stores (but not online or at apple stores anywhere)
Hello,
I would like to know if you could email me, as I have a project I would like you to work on. If I can take you away from your current company, all the better but I would like you to hear me out.
Regards,
Dr. Flynn
Happy, happy birthday from Bennigans to you!!!
Hey V, just wanted to say Happy Birthday! Hope it was awesome!
Good call on the adaptor. Everyone should grab one before the ebay vultures really get going.
iPhone haters are silly. It’s a product. You either buy it or don’t. You either like it or don’t.
Me? I’m extremely happy with mine. It’s the only phone I’ve ever owned that makes me happy. Can’t say that about my Treo 700, which I frequently wanted to throw in a lake.
Hey…I think I was the FIRST to note this on theapplephoneshow.com blog. As soon as I got my iPhone, I immediately rememberd the iPod shuffle sport case, and voila…problem solved!
Hey, if it works, it works!
Those Ultimate Ears look sweet, they remind me a lot of the ear audio clarifiers I used when I worked in local news… (see here for what I mean: http://www.audioimplements.com/custom%20earpieces.htm )The price tag seems really high for the high end (800 clams?) Which model do you own? Just wondering…
Charlie in RI…
No I don’t own a Bobopedic bed or the Bobinizer from Bobs Discount Furniture…
I’ve been testing the Shure iPhone adapter (prototype). It will be relatively pricey at $40, but it has a great in-line mic and the control button. It will work with your UE’s, but the combined cord will end up too long. However, if you’ve got any of the recent Shure models with modular cords, this is not a good solution, it’s *perfect*.

PLEASE NOTE!
The V-Moda Headset that is made for the IPhone, does not have an answer feature like the Apple headset that is included. I purchased the headset and had to return it. It does have a mic, but no switch to answer the phone.

Thanks to Ashwin and MRudd! Fixed the post.
Word is that V-Moda will be updating their headset to include the call/answer button (as well as the mic) in a few months.
Apple online store (not sure about local stores) is now selling the Shure iPhone headphone adapter with mic and button. Cost is $40. and it will allow you to use any headphones/earbuds with the iPhone and get call/answer button and mic functionality too.

Well nix the Shure adapter above-it puts the mic way too low and makes your cables too long to be useful.
I’ve been using the dock included with the iPhone in order to play the iPhone in my car, which has a minijack cord that doesn’t fit the iPhone directly. Works great!
Hey Veronica!
I’m glad you’re enjoying your iPhone. Personally I’m a bit too poor to own one (Plus I
Nasty problem: after using headphones to listen to music, my iPhone won’t work as a phone except on speaker or through the headset. It’s as if it hasn’t realised that the headset has been disconnected.
Has anyone else had this problem?
