Tuesday night I was finally able to live out a dream of mine since I was 12 years old - I saw the Smashing Pumpkins live. For whatever reason, I always missed them when I was in high school (and before that, I was “too young” to go to concerts, according to my mother). When I heard that they were getting back together and playing no less than ten shows here in San Francisco, I immediately had Ryan buy us tickets for my birthday.
The show was good, albeit way too long (I never thought I’d say that an SP show could ever go too long). It was over 2 hours, and by the end I felt like my back was about to break, or my feet were about to disintegrate… whichever came first. They started off the set with some new tunes, and although I have Zeitgeist I’m not all that familiar with the new songs. Then they played a few surprises, like “The Aeroplane Flies High” (from the box set), “Drown” (another B-side), and “Bullet with Butterfly Wings.”
Jimmy Chamberlin stole the show towards the end with an amazing drum solo, and we got a peek into the personality of the new bassist, Ginger Reyes, when they skipped a song without telling her. She seemed very sweet, and joked about it with Billy on stage. OK, now I’m just getting too involved, sorry.
Billy was kind of down on San Francisco, saying that everyone he met was “mean.” Really? But I guess it gave him the inspiration to write a new song, called “Peace and Love and All That Other Shit,” which is the video I took that you see above. It’s sad that SF wasn’t his cup of tea (and too bad they’re playing so many shows here, I guess) but the song was one of the highlights of the evening for me.
I’m having trouble finding the setlist for the show, but I remember them also playing “Tonight, Tonight,” “Disarm” (one of my all-time favorites), “Tarantula,” “Doomsday Clock” and “United States.” A mix of old and new, but as Billy said at the opening of the show, “This is 2007, not 1992. Welcome to the new decade.” It would have been nice to see them back in the day, but it was still totally worth the sore feet.

amazing video! pumpkins ftw!
Oh wow, Smashing Pumpkins are one of my favorite bands from the 90’s. That’s great that you got to see then and thanks for sharing! I bet Bullets With Butterfly Wings live was awesome!
So this is why you spent $16 for nachos? Good reason, I say. Did you have fun?
Good video quality V. I have been a fan of SP for a while, but haven’t heard them in a while. I bet the Fillmore was alive last night
I saw Jonny Lang there a few weeks back, and it was my first time there. Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for taking this video.
Billy is too much of a douche for me to get into SP. I prefer Silversun Pickups now, anyway.
Wow, I am so jealous. I would love to see them but sadly they will not be anywhere close to me. Oh well, I did get to see them back on the Mellon Collie Tour and it was great. They were excellent live and I remember the show being really long. Even as a huge fan who has everything from them it was almost too much.
I saw them in Miami and Billy had been nice that night, after like the 2nd or 3rd encore he said something along the line of Now that everyone left we can play for the real fans. A great concert.
Thanks for sharing the video.
I saw them once at the Hennepin Ave Block Party in Minneapolis. Free show, couldn’t have been a better free show as Cracker opened for them. Good times.
Dudette, I thought you were all about the Vimeo.
@Pierre - Nope, I’ve never used it! All my clips are on Blip or YouTube.
excellent clip V, how did you get the video. Did you sneek a camcorder in or is that off some phone?
I was a HUGE pumpkins fan back in the day. Saw them on The Old Grey Whistle Test on the BBC doing a song off Gish, it had just been released in UK. Went to see them live at Astoria in London and to this day it is still one of the best shows I have seen. They were so tight and rocked the house. And I was so in crush with D’arcy, she was SO slinky in her purple cruched velvet jumpsuit. That was the best era for me. Then Singles came out and Drown was on that (I think) and it was the perfect grunge movie/soundtrack.
Saw them again at Lollapalooza and by that time Billy had shaved his head and was really angry or something. He screamed all the lyrics and really did not look like he gave a damn. Too bad to watch one of your favourite bands take a nose dive in the shitter. Like watching Alice In Chains lose themselves to smack, what a waste…
Anyhow, this looks really good. Like the song. Seems like a return to simpler stuff. Will check out Zeitgeist, it will be the first Pumpkins album I’ve bought in a long time. But nothing can ever beat that opening drum riff to I Am One on Gish. Pure magic..
cheers
Man, that song was long and repetitive. No wonder the show was so grueling for you to stand through!
Awesome, THANKS
! Sounds incredible good through my laptop soundcard and my bose wave radio cd. must be a good cam or its just because i cant afford to buy one and lost track of the development of those…
Im kind of 50/50 on the smashing pumpkins, but I can say without a doubt that Billy is a bit of a wanker.
@Veronica - Hmm, maybe you shouldn’t try it. You’ll like it too much and will want to make love to it.
i saw them twice in ‘96. the first time was at the very first tibetan freedom concert in GG park, which was only my second concert, and total shit. they played like 4 songs and then went into a 20min version of silverfuck. totally lame. the second time was about 6 months later at the cow palace. that show was much more satisfying, but way too big. this was at the height of melon collie, so you can imagine. i’ve never really had any desire to see them since, and generally lost interest in them over subsequent albums. i guess it doesn’t help that billy is such an unlikable guy. his idea of SF’ans being “mean” probably translatres to no one mobbing him on the street, sniffing his balls, cos he’s like billy corgan. but that’s just how we roll in SF.
incidentally, my first concert was a few months prior when i got to see radiohead on tour for the bends. needless to say, they set the bar pretty high. i’ve since seen them about 11 or 12 times (ftw!).
i liked SP back in the day, but not much of a fan of their new stuff, but cool video, what digicam did you use to record ?
I saw the White Stripes on Tuesday and that was a long show (thank god I was sitting) but 2 hours is out of control.
Maybe Billy’s idea of people being “mean” is not kissing his ass. He is notorious for being a buttwad.
What video camera did you use? It’s so darn pretty!
Guess who is now the #1 Google result for Veronica…
Ah Veronica. I’m a big fan. I’m pretty sure ive watched every single prize fight 3 times. I’m very sad to see you leave Cnet but I wish you the best of luck and can’t wait to see what you do next.
And the Smashing Pumpkins are awesome.
ugh, you know when i was standing in line i was thinking to myself “I bet veronica belmont is here right now”. I got there at 10:00am and ended up terribly drunk and sunburnt.
Anyhow, we’re putting a dvd together of all the fillmore shows. My friend monte brought his camera to all 13 shows and he plans on making super-pumpkins-show-archive out of them.
I’ll let you know when it comes out.
also, drown = amazing
Veronica - You mentioned you were having trouble finding a setlist for that show. FYI the Pumpkins upload the setlists for all their shows to the photo gallery on their website if you’re still looking. Linky:

He’s right.
Peope here may not be mean, but they are elitist and uptight. But it’s a great city and fantastic area so it balances out the negativity.
pumpkins rock. thanks for the video
thanks for sharing!
i’m going to see them tonight.. probably just as excited to see the black angels open. may review the show on my site if anything particularly interesting happens.
Thanks , Awsome Video , Awsome band.Awsome Blog.
