OK, I promise after this post we can all move on from the resolutions discussion, but a few people mentioned last year’s post, and wondered how well I stuck with them! Here they are:
1. Get out of the house more, and that does not include online worlds.
I think I get out a little more… maybe not. It’s probably the same.
2. Pick a new MP3 player
Got the iPhone! That totally counts.
3. Actually go to the gym that I pay $40 a month for (plus $5 towel service I don’t use).
Nope. I went maybe three times. Ouch.
4. Get really good at Gears of War on Live.
HAH! Nope. I was distracted by other games. OK, game. Shut up!
5. Ride my bike places.
I regressed with this one. I sold my bike. But I have a new one now!!
6. Cook at home more instead of eating out.
Yeah, no.
7. Learn to cook.
That probably has a lot to do with the issue of number six.
8. Start working on at least some of the projects in my head.
Yes! I did that!
9. Read some books that aren’t in the fantasy genre.
Does science fiction count as not in the fantasy genre?
10. Go on a serious vacation.
Heck yeah! Japan!
11. Get a better camera and learn to take better photos.
I got a Canon G7 that I’m really enjoying. Not sure if my phototaking ability has improved too much though!
12. Make more friends.
Totally!
13. Have Buzz Out Loud become more popular than TWiT or Diggnation! Haha. Yeah right.
They’re always #1 in my book! Well, except for my show, but you know what I mean ![]()
14. Travel for work more.
Be careful what you wish for!
15. Get a decent haircut.
Meh.
Let’s hope I do a better job this year.

Looks like you are getting a good start on your new number 1. Two blogs in less than a week! w00t!
You can combine a few from last year… #1+#3 (more exercise) + #11. Take walks in the park and stop to take pictures. The more you take the better your “eye” gets and the more familiar you will get with the settings.
Good luck and Happy New Year.
If you don’t work out, how are you so hawt?
Pffft, you always have great hair.
Happy New Year, V!
Regarding #13, I honestly feel that BOL is more popular than TWiT. BOL is a daily show and is able to cover far more news than a weekly show like TWiT. Most of the news that TWiT covers is quite stale by the time they record it, and the only benefit is commentary by Leo and his guests (which, quite frankly is hit and miss).
Comparing BOL and Diggnation is not an Apples-to-Apples comparison. BOL is audio while Diggnation is video BOL follows mainstream tech news while Diggnation covers the niche stuff found on Digg. BOL has sober hosts and Digg . . .
I do think that BOL should publish a video version. I know it would be just a shot of Tom and Molly in the studio, but I am positive that many fans would love to see Tom’s enigmatic smiles and Molly’s rants.
That’s great, you had better success than many people!
Great haircut, great show on Maholo; and you did a great job when at BOL.
I had similar resolutions…
1. Um, does visiting family to play on someone’s PS3 count?
2. I think I got it picked out, now I need the $$$….
5. I got an air pump… it’s somewhere…
6. Does microwave count?
8. Well, partly, see #11
9. quote above q & a
11. Ditto on the G7 (now the G9 is out with Raw support, just my luck)
12. Um, no comment, see #1
13. 1.Maholo, 2.BOL,
15. mine works as long as I’m taking the pictures not having them taken of me….
Regarding 6 and 7, I recommend this book: Frozen Assets: Cook for a Day, Eat for a Month.
During the Thanksgiving holiday, I figured that following the feast, I wouldn’t be so easy to hunger and I followed this book. It took me three days really, since I didn’t read ahead and missed some of the baking pans I would need. Next time, I’m sure I’ll be able to do it in one day. I’ve been eating from my freezer since with the exception of eating out with friends a couple of times for holiday occasions.
What it does is set you up with all your staple meals and saves you from spoilage of the usual perishable items. Once you’ve spent this time filling your freezer, you don’t have to worry about most day-to-day meals (lunch or dinner). And that will free you up for better choosing times you can learn to cook those savory meals you might always have wanted.
The book is geared for a family of six, so couples or single folks will be able to eat for 3 to 6 times longer. It also covers the two-week method in case you don’t have freezer space or can’t set aside a full day to cook for the month version. There are other books on the subject, I have two others, and they have more meal ideas, but this was my first and it’s been very enlightening of the power of freezing meals.
I miss the 2006/2007 haircut.
How about reading books about history, not the kind you have to read for a history lesson, but something related maybe to the age of russian princess or civil wars, there are interesting stories and novels, better than science fiction books because it really happened. (Also they’ve inspired sci-fi books and movies). Or maybe, since you work near a lot of fun gadgets, a book on psychology (again not boring stuff), i’ve read “the psychology of everyday things” and was a fun, a bit old, but non-technical book about why sometimes it’s so difficult to use some interfaces like doors, computers, calculators, etc…
Doug’s advice sounds really good.
The way I learned to cook was by 1) learning not to be scared of the stove or cutting things or using recipes that and 2) planning as I shop.
That latter is really the essence of cooking, actually. If you’re in the supermarket and you see some boneless skinless chicken fillets, for example, you can immediately think “Hey! If I put some fresh rosemary and garlic and onion and olive oil together, stick the chicken with all that in a bag, I’ll be marinating the chicken in all that good stuff.”
I mean, it is possible to plan meals on the fly – think about the concept of sides, and how they can be mixed and matched with an entree.
Does that help at all? I don’t wanna be preachy, but there’s like a way of thinking about planning meals that doesn’t take a whole lot of time, and you can be cooking way sooner than you think.
Veronica,
If you want to continue to work on your camera work check out http://www.strobist.com (strobist.blogspot.com). Its all about improving your skills by using off camera lighting instead of the little on-board flash. You can go thru Lighting 101 and learn some wonderful things.
veronica, where are the new ones for 2008?
let me tell you one thing: forget the haircut, it is so nice (:
Yeah, I like your hair, too.
Where are 2008 resolutions?
X (marks the spot)
On count of number 15. I think your haircut looks great.
Actually I don’t like the bangs as much as your previous ‘doo
And I think cooking at home is overrated. Yes much more economical, but I love eating out!
