Vii Fit: Day 1

As some of you may have seen on Engadget, Ryan is challenging himself to a month of suffering at the hands of the Wii Fit. And while he is nowhere near overweight, we do live a somewhat… sedentary lifestyle. A lot of sitting is involved. Therefore I’ve decide to come along on his fitness odyssey, not only as a supportive measure, but also to encourage myself to live a healthier lifestyle.
Yes, if it takes a video game to get me off my lazy ass, then so be it.
According to the little white board sitting on my living room floor, here are my stats so far:
Weight (I can’t believe I’m telling you these things): 117 lbs
Height: 5’7″
BMI: 18.5
Body Age: 35 (WTF?!)
Actual Age: 25
OK, so apparently I’m a little underweight (my burrito belly is begging to differ). I’m not sure how Wii Fit expects to solve this problem (“Please get off the Wii Fit and go eat a pizza while watching Battlestar Galactica”) but I guess I need to build more muscle mass. The Fit also told me that my balance sucks by asking me “Do you trip a lot when you walk?” You snarky bastard.
I’ll be reporting every couple of days to let you know how this thing is going. I know the Wii Fit isn’t exactly the same as training for a triathlon, but it’s more exercising than I ever do (except for climbing, which I hope to work more into this month as well). Wish me luck!

i’m waiting to see your wii fit review before getting one. i bought the console “strictly” for ddr, but now i’m using the open source Step Mania, and the wii is collecting dust. i sold my car several years ago and just use a bike here in Boston, but … it’s a video game! so i’ll probably do it.
give us the play by fall by play.

Hey V!
Awesome! I just started a couple of days ago on a non-game related exerc*** (I don’t want to swear) program. While I probably won’t eat a pizza – in addition to my standard sedentary lifestyle, I’m also going to be sitting on my fat butt and watching AI and BSG weekly (which you could say that BSG has been up till now as well – er, weak that is).
I’m not sure how we can compare, but I’ll give you my stats (which are way the hell more embarrassing)
Height: 5 7 1/2 (on a good day immediately after getting up)
Weight: 175 (so essentially the same as the 6ft tall Ryan – I won’t mention that I think my scale is about 10 lbs light…)
Waist: 41 3/8 inches
Frame: Small
BMI: Fat-tub-o-lard (my ideal weight is like 145-150 so I’m what – 40% a combo of Fluff and peanut butter?)
Body age: Well, everyone thinks I’m in my mid 30s so I’ll go with that instead of the impossible reality that I’m in my late 40′s. Sorry, I don’t have a hi-tech measure.I envy your going climbing! that will rock your upper body strength!
Good luck to both you and Ryan I’ll look forward to following both of your results!

I got Wii Fit the day after it was released and it is totally awesome. I think it says “Do you trip a lot when you walk?” every time when you first do it as it has done that for every single person i know who has done it ~5 (maybe I just have very uncoordinated friends!). I am slightly bemused as I am 16 and my Wii Fit age is currently 16 and I’m wondering whether it will make my age less than that as I improve? Anyway good luck and so long us you eat enough to make up for the extra exercise (as well as lots of protein and spinach) you shouldn’t have to worry about losing weight.

I’ve always been slim, but wanted to try to stay fit, so I joined a gym. After two weeks of tracking my progress, my trainer was concerned about my weight loss. Apparently I have a high metabolism and…per the trainer…need to eat six meals a day because of my exercising.
Per the data you may have submitted to the Wii, it may…by how it’s been programmed to respond…judge you to be undernourished?

Veronica, I told this to Ryan as well: what you really need to test before you start is your body fat percentage. You may be what we call (and forgive me for this) “skinny fat”. That means that while you are not overweight (actually underweight), your fat and muscle ratios are out of whack. Your goal is not to lose weight, but to lose fat (while gaining some muscle and thus actually gaining some weight). Tracking your weight and BMI is really not going to give you a good indication of your fitness given your current body situation.

Not so much insane as using the BMI category oddities for shock value! :0) The BMI is really not very useful except in very extreme cases. Better to use body fat percentage as well as a simple “inches” test. Get one of those cloth measuring tapes and measure belly, thighs, upper arms, etc. These will be a better measurement of fat loss than your actual weight.
BTW, I have been following your Twitter and just think about that burrito truck when you are working out! Motivation . . .
To echo what Christian says, though, you look great already, so it is more about fitness level than body shape.

I have learned from experience to avoid commenting about a woman’s weight. With that cowardly disclaimer out of the way, I will just say that I want Veronica to be healthy and happy, don’t care what the numbers say.
…now Ryan on the other hand! I about fell out of my chair laughing when I saw 20,000+ people selected “Yeah, dude seriously needs it” from poll that asked “Do you want Ryan to get off his ass and track his Wii Fit progress for a month?”. So funny! And yeah I want video of Ryan working out on the Wii fit with teh theme song from Rocky playing in the background!

I think what most surprised me about it was how addicting the tracking features are. I’m in your boat, I’m “underweight” (I’m one of those tall skinny dudes), so I started working out to see if I could put on some muscle mass and it was really satisfying to see it charted out for me on a daily basis.
Plus because it’s a game it didn’t feel like a chore at all turning on my Wii and playing it for a half-hour or more a day.
If you have family or friends who also use it, it’s surprisingly fun to try and beat their high scores. I had a “balance-off” with a coworker and she had the high score on the “Ultimate Balance Test” game for a week. I vowed to improve my balance and eventually overtook her. Yes!

like seriously we could have a long discussion about the actual benefit of this thing and while nintendo of course claims it to be useful and i can see stuff like yoga positions and what not totally being accomplished by the average person without too bad joint problems i don’t see how this thingy will ever be able to compensate for 30 minutes of running or lets say 100 push ups. but hey, you can always use it as a really nice little table for breakfast in bed

looking forward to see the results.

V is alive! 5’7″? Moderately height challenged, but as long as your feet touch the ground is what counts.
Did Dvorak ever find that ST outfit you two talked about? If you bulk up with muscle mass you might need to size it a bit bigger. Remember not to chase the scale or the Wii. Eat healthy food and get plenty of rest. Good luck.

I am still unsure if I want to buy Wii Fit or go to the Gym. I have lost 60 pounds, went from 260 to 200, so I am thin again, but would Wii Fit help me tone and build muscle? I need to stay away from Del Taco or all will be lost. Good luck Veronica, although why some women toy with perfection is beyond me.

I bought the Wii just so I could then buy the Fit (ostensibly it’s a birthday present for Leah, but I need it more than she does. The only exercise I get is walking around airports and trade shows). I figure the Wii + Fit ($250 + 90) costs less than any treadmill or stationary bike and it doesn’t take up any space. The hope is that because it’s an interactive gadget, there’s a better chance we’ll use it long term. If not, at least it doesn’t take up any space, and the kids are having a blast with the games.
