Ryan has been quite taken by the Droid SMS alert sound (as evidenced by the most recent gdgt podcast) so I decided it would be fitting to make it his ringtone on my iPhone when he calls. Unfortunately, I realized after the fact that it would have been much funnier to make it the default

It’s no secret that iPhone applications are a breakout hit for Apple, even beyond their own expectations. Because of this, a culture of app fanatics is popping up online, which include a slew of new podcasts and video shows that cater to people looking for the best and brightest apps out there. Frankly, with all

Embedded video from CNN Video Despite losing my voice yesterday, I rallied for an appearance on CNN.com this morning with MG Siegler, Ben Parr and Mark McClusky. We spoke about the new iPhone 3G S and if now is a good time to upgrade, our favorite apps, and if Blackberry has a chance to win

I’ll be judging the Boxee Dev Challenge along with my friends Cali Lewis, Chris Pirillo and Boxee CEO Avner Ronen. Here are the details: the new boxee API enables developers to build and publish apps for boxee users. while people are working on a variety of boxee apps, we thought it would be a good

Last week the guys over at Golden Shellback, who make “splashproof” coatings for gadgets, sent me a 1GB silver iPod shuffle (splashproofed, of course). Since I already have an iPhone to listen to my tunes on I thought it would be fun to give it away here on the site! The “contest” is going to

I’ve had a couple of weeks to play with the new T-Mobile G1 running Google’s Android, and I have to say that I’ve really enjoyed it. I’m not going to write a full review here, because I think that’s been done quite thoroughly by others in the blogosphere (see Engadget’s full review, and Ryan’s impressions).

Last winter, the world was saddened to learn of the demise of the instant film produced by the Polaroid Corporation, which filed for bankruptcy. In spite of a resurgence of popularity by hipsters and fans (read: everyone) of the Outkast song “Hey Ya!” digital cameras have taken over the market, and people just weren’t buying

I was listening to the gdgt roundtable this morning, and they started talking about the iPhone / iPod Touch as a gaming device. Josh Topolsky insisted that Apple was trying to drink Sony and Nintendo’s milkshakes, while Ryan said that Apple is just going for the “value add” of having games. This got me thinking

I made a Friendfeed post a while ago about this, and then I realized that microblogging is sucking whatever ideas I have for blog posts right out of my head and turning them into one-sentence blips in the social-networking ether… Anyhow. The iPhone interface is intuitive. However, this does not mean that it’s practical, especially

This is how they should have done it since day 1. Maybe if we all reblog the video enough Apple will catch on.

It’s a great idea, but one I won’t hold my breath on.

I’ve got 5 pages of apps, a tool like that would be so handy to have.
Thanks

I agree, we need to keep spreading this video until Apple does it. Im gonna post it on my blog.

This what we need! I had my iPhone for four months now and its got around 50 apps on it. The other day I tried organizing them, after 2 minutes i said forget this!

Totally agree, I have felt that this was sorely needed since I finally picked one up at Xmas. I tried to reorganize my apps last week and it got very messy very quickly LOL. I have ten pages of apps is that normal/not very many/too many?

The most important interface for iPhone would be speech recognition based commanding to launch an app or browse the app pages.

Ugh, yes, this is a much needed feature. But knowing how stubborn Apple can be about its original designs/interfaces, it may be years before anything like this happens. They still won’t let go of the one-button mouse. C’mon!

A great concept and one I think would certainly improve the user experience. Now if you actually had a multi-touch on the MBA…….I run away with myself.

This is an awesome idea – definitely something I’d love to see.

I’d love to be able to see all 9 available screens at once for organizing. 3 rows of 3? Two rows (5 & 4)? Just makes sense to be able to group my games, reference, news, social, etc. apps together as I want them.

Such a simple concept and would be SO useful! Thanks for shedding light.

I hate to go against the flow here but I will. I think apple has already made iTunes way too bloated and this will just add to the problem. Also not every user of iTunes uses the iPhone or the touch and to thrust this onto all users would be too much.

GOD YES! Apple really needs to do something like this. I am constantly pushing apps off the 9th page by accident. It’s near to impossible to move an app from one page to another without accidentally moving an app one a page full of apps.
I have 9 pages of apps with 15 apps per page so that I can move from page to page without accidentally moving an app. This means I can only have 139 apps instead of the 148 maximum.
A system like the one shown in the video would make life a billion times better!
Please Apple, do something like this!
Robert: Guess what, if you don’t use an iPhone/iPod Touch, then you would not see the interface to move apps around. Simple as that.

I could really use this, it’s such a pain trying to organise apps with a little over 5 pages, I’d hate to have 10 to deal with.
Nice video. But seriously if you actually need this then what the really need is to clean some of the crap off your phone.
This is great! And badly needed. I disagree that it would further bloat iTunes. It could just be functional if you’ve attached an iPhone/iTouch to the computer. The “Applications” section of my library never showed up until I hooked up my iPhone.

darrin is right on. What we need is a folder based system (did I really say that?) or some other way to view categories of apps.
Or, how about a multi-function app that would tie all of this amazing functionality together? I guess that’s Apple’s job, hopefully they are watching/working…

I would rather just have folders. My 7 pages of finding stuff would just be a two click/tap process if I could sort it into folders.

Anyone else down to about two or three apps they actually use daily anyway? Most apps I download, including the games, are played/used once or twice and then forgotten. People are making great apps; I’m just not using them.
I would love this! With 9 pages of apps… it is hard to find where the apps are.
I find it a bit of a nuisance when there is a app at the far back page that I want to move all the way to the front. So this program would be nice. However, I would like a way to do these same functions ON my iPhone without having to sync it.
Nevertheless, kudos on the great idea in this video.

definatly need this especially when i have 10 pages of apps

I own over 400 apps and while I have slowed down, am obviously not done yet. I don’t want to delete any so need a way to organize on iTunes as well as on my iPhone.
I jailbroke once and has Categories and G the Gold launcher but want Apple to fix this. My tunes have categories and genres and I can rate them. That would be enough.
anything would be better than what we have currently. C’mon Apple!
Wonderful!
All it needs now is a little slide out tray at the bottom with all of your applications.
While that tool is good for sorting stuff, if you want to start from scratch it’d be very nice, and then you sort later on when new apps arrive.

I can’t believe how unbelievably difficult Apple makes it to organize apps. The implementation in the video is absolutely perfect. Apple, please?!???

it looks very much like the thing on this video, too bad it’s only available on mac
but they say itunes 9 might do something like that too.
