The next generation of The Next Generation
Last Star Trek post for a while, I promise. After seeing the film on Friday (which was fraking awesome, btw… wait, am I allowed to say “fraking” in regard to Star Trek? Whatever) I started wondering who would be cast if they were to remake TNG into a younger, hipper film. So here are my top choices from the Friendfeed post! OK, maybe not everyone on this list is a spring chicken, but it’s harder to think of people than you would think!
Amy Adams as Dr. Beverly Crusher
I picked this one, because I think Amy would be the perfect sassy redhead to take over sick bay. Plus, she has Gates McFadden’s classic beauty.
Natalie Portman as Deanna Troi
Several people selected Natalie as a good choice for the role of Deanna Troi, probably because she has the looks (especially with her hair longer) and that somewhat mystical quality to her.
Cuba Gooding Jr. as Geordi La Forge
This is another one I came up with, because even though Cuba hasn’t been in anything great lately I think he’d make a decent La Forge. He has the humor and thoughtfulness that LeVar Burton displayed in the role (OK, now I’m starting to feel like total dork for writing this post… must keep going…).
Matthew Macfadyen as Data
When MG posted this one, I couldn’t believe what a spitting image of Brent Spiner he is! He’s got the acting chops to pull of the role of the android as well.
Djimon Hounsou as Worf
Strong and handsome, Djimon has the gravitas to pull off an excellent Worf. He’s a phenomenal actor, so he’d be able to show the inner struggle that Worf faces everyday as a Klingon serving in Starfleet.
Bearded Matthew Fox as William Riker
What? He’s a good lookin’ guy, and we know he can do the action-adventure thing pretty well, which was always Riker’s strong point. Plus, the ladies love him.
Patrick Stewart as Jean Luc Picard
He doesn’t age, apparently, so I see no need to replace him.
Have any better suggestions? Let me know in the comments!

Those are great picks, especially Natalie Portman! I would just watch any TV show if she were starring in it.
As much as I love TNG, a recast and remake would make me compare the two. I’d love a Star Trek where the Borg have taken over the universe and have no more life to assimilate but they can’t assimilate Earth because there are several renegade armada fleets strewn across the universe rescuing other life forms apart that we have a pact with the Borg because we have the ultimate weapon to destroy them.
Borg Queen: Natalie Portman FTW! <3

*thumbs up*
I could see all of them working well (perhaps a little too well). Matthew Macfadyen is the double of Brent Spiner – never noticed that before at all!
Extra points for including Matthew Fox (although…where did you find that ghastly pic?), not sure he’d work quite as well as the rest but he’s definately easy on the eyes.

Your choice of Matthew Fox as William Riker got me thinking. Why not just use the entire cast of LOST as the new cast for TNG? Call it “LOST: The Next Generation.” Jack as Riker. John Locke would make a great Jean Luc. Ben Linus as Data. Rousseau as Deanna Troi. Mr. Eko as Worf. Michael as Geordi. Charlotte Lewis as Dr. Crusher. Even the kid who played the young Ben Linus could be Wesley Crusher. Voila! In the final scene of LOST, the screen starts shaking and everything goes to white. Scene one of LOST: TNG would have the characters from the island magically transported through time (and space) to the main bridge of the Enterprise. If nothing else, it would make a great SNL skit.

Even before you ping’ed me on Twitter to ask my opinion on this I actually shared it on Google Reader because it was so spot on. I’m surprised you were able to find such perfect photos of these actors to show how TNG-ready they are too! Of course, Rudy and I loved the Matthew Fox and Patrick Stewart castings the most… you is so clever!

As Beverly’s biggest fan, Amy Adams is def the only choice I would personally condone. Glad we’re on the same wavlength
Love all of them! That pic looks so like Deanna too. And yes – Patrick Stewart in any era is grogeous and the only Jean-Luc there ever ought to be. But wait – patrick and Amy Adams….too much of an age gap? Meh. I would, and I’m 18 lol.
Also, Cate Blanchett. Borg Queen. SOLD. They should perhaps even break canon to put that in the TOS relaunch!!!!

amy Adams as crusher is probably the best idea I ever heard!!! Portman as troi is an interesting idea. You should get a new guy as picard because if you replace the rest off the cast then you have to replace him too. Maybe someone who isint bald because he will be upunger. Also zac efron as Wesley is a bad idea. He’s to old anyways.

Why not do like the original series and have an animated version of TNG? That way, they can all reprise their roles!
