There is a TV station/media company (I think) in The Netherlands called Veronica. As a result, I get a lot of tweets directed at me in regards to their programming. The FriendFeeders had a little fun with the concept, and made some suggestions as to my potential network shows. Here are my favorites:

Doesn’t this totally remind you of the rap battle from 8 Mile? No?

The amazing beatboxer Kid Beyond (who I first heard at w00tstock back in the fall) did a damn good job going up against Jonathan Coulton and his ZenDrum, but in the end I’ve gotta give it to JoCo. I’m a sucker for Beyoncé.

The rest of the show, by the way, was also great. Although, Paul and Storm let me down a little, with only a 12 minute long version of The Captain’s Wife’s Lament. DEJECTED ARRR!!!

Droid SMS alert on the iPhone

Ryan has been quite taken by the Droid SMS alert sound (as evidenced by the most recent gdgt podcast) so I decided it would be fitting to make it his ringtone on my iPhone when he calls.

Unfortunately, I realized after the fact that it would have been much funnier to make it the default ringtone on his phone for all calls. You can get the sound here for your own personal enjoyment.

I used MakeiPhoneRingtone after converting the .wav to .aac, but you can also use Fission, GarageBand or the myriad other methods available.

As if Anthony Bourdain could get any more animated!

If The Venture Brothers and Aqua Teen Hunger Force came together and had a little lovechild with No Reservations, I have a feeling it would look like the newest project from Anthony Bourdain and The Travel Channel. The aptly-named Anthony Bourdain’s Alternate Universe is a completely animated series that delves deep into the twisted mind of the celebrity chef (and it looks like there will be more than a few Rachel Ray jokes).

Anthony is one of my idols, not only because of his on-air persona, but because it’s so obvious that he loves what he does (even when he’s frustrated during a shoot, which I find especially hilarious and relatable). In the spirit of Tony, I’ll say that I’m looking forward to his new project almost as much as he looks forward to a new, exotic pork dish.

Guest Riffing on American Thrift!

On a totally unrelated note, I forgot to tell you guys that I blacked out during District 9. As a fear response! It’s not even scary! Can you imagine what would happen to me in a real horror movie? Anyhow, I’m a weirdo, and I was fine after 5 minutes or so. Go watch it if you haven’t already, it’s passing out good!

“Glee” has nothing on these kids!

Have you seen the new show Glee? Not only is it amazing, but there’s great music in it too (if you’re into hearing teenagers singing well-known rock and show tunes). But this post from Best Week Ever (via BuzzFeed) totally made my day:

That’s right, a choir singing “Don’t Stop Believin’”. Love it. The kids from PS22 have also covered two of my other favorite songs: “Landslide” and “Eye of the Tiger”! I wish we were allowed to sing songs like that when I was in choir.

Last Star Trek post for a while, I promise. After seeing the film on Friday (which was fraking awesome, btw… wait, am I allowed to say “fraking” in regard to Star Trek? Whatever) I started wondering who would be cast if they were to remake TNG into a younger, hipper film. So here are my top choices from the Friendfeed post! OK, maybe not everyone on this list is a spring chicken, but it’s harder to think of people than you would think!

Amy Adams as Dr. Beverly Crusher

I picked this one, because I think Amy would be the perfect sassy redhead to take over sick bay. Plus, she has Gates McFadden’s classic beauty.

Natalie Portman as Deanna Troi

Several people selected Natalie as a good choice for the role of Deanna Troi, probably because she has the looks (especially with her hair longer) and that somewhat mystical quality to her.

Cuba Gooding Jr. as Geordi La Forge

This is another one I came up with, because even though Cuba hasn’t been in anything great lately I think he’d make a decent La Forge. He has the humor and thoughtfulness that LeVar Burton displayed in the role (OK, now I’m starting to feel like total dork for writing this post… must keep going…).

Matthew Macfadyen as Data

When MG posted this one, I couldn’t believe what a spitting image of Brent Spiner he is! He’s got the acting chops to pull of the role of the android as well.

Djimon Hounsou as Worf

Strong and handsome, Djimon has the gravitas to pull off an excellent Worf. He’s a phenomenal actor, so he’d be able to show the inner struggle that Worf faces everyday as a Klingon serving in Starfleet.

Bearded Matthew Fox as William Riker

What? He’s a good lookin’ guy, and we know he can do the action-adventure thing pretty well, which was always Riker’s strong point. Plus, the ladies love him.

Patrick Stewart as Jean Luc Picard

He doesn’t age, apparently, so I see no need to replace him.

I tend to read books in trilogies (or trilogies of trilogies) but this graph from DanMeth.com about movie threesomes (and how they stack up) made me giggle. Do you agree with his assessments? I have to say that I disagree very strongly with Jurassic Park, but I’m dinosaur biased. OK, maybe the last two movies in that series sucked, but still.

The CollegeHumor show is going to be AWESOME

There is nothing I don’t love about the trailer for the new CollegeHumor show on MTV. Maybe it’s because Jake and Amir are in it. Or maybe it’s because I honestly have no idea what they do at work all day. Possibly it’s because The Hills is on hiatus and The City just ain’t cutting it and dammit I need something to fill the void.

Anyhow, the hilarity begins on MTV on February 8th at 9:30 PM.

Kanye West gets a “tweetposter”

Kanye West is a little upset about being impersonated on Twitter. There have always been celebrity impostors on the site (and a growing number of real celebs actively using it), but Kanye seems to get a little more sensitive about this kind of thing: he’s much more hands-on with his audience than the average star, so it’s natural that he would take it a bit more personally when someone steps in on that territory.

As Twitter grows, I wonder how they’ll treat this kind of situation. Do they immediately turn over the false account, as may have been done for the also tech-saavy Al Gore? And how does a celeb (if they’re not the blogging sort, like Mr. West) prove that they’re the real deal? I guess we’ll find out shortly, depending on what Kanye decides to post in the coming days.

Len hit me with a photo meme, so I’m honor bound to continue the ~~menace~~ tradition. Here are the rules:

OK! You see the result above, which was taken from the Halloween party at Future US, where I work to produce Qore. Seems fitting, since I’ve been playing so much Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3 that I see zombies in my dreams almost every single night. It’s becoming an issue.

RiffTrax makes bad movies awesome

Looking for a reason to drag out your old copy of The Matrix or Raiders of the Lost Ark? OK, bad examples, you don’t really need a reason for those. How about Batman and Robin or Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith? These movies can actually be tolerable with the help of Rifftrax, possibly the greatest thing to happen to home movie viewing since Netflix. Created by Mystery Science Theater 3000 alum Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett, they continue the tried and true formula of commenting (hilariously) as a film plays. If you’re not familiar with the format, think of it as having your three most sarcastic and absurd friends sitting in your living room with you, with a constant running commentary. Yes, it could be annoying if you’ve never seen the film, but Rifftrax tends to hit the most popular blockbusters that you’ve likely seen 50 times.

I’ve seen MST3K in the past, and Ryan is a huge fan (and by “fan” I mean he was an actual fan club member…), but it was our friend Dan that introduced us to Rifftrax a few months ago. I was surprised that I hadn’t heard more about it, considering how neatly it fits into two major areas of interest for me: geeky movies and downloadable content. Getting your Rifftrax is easy enough: you pick a movie, download the Rifftrax audio file, and then follow the syncing instructions. Throughout the film, DisembAudio (the robotic voice behind their “Perfect Synch Technology”) will read a line of dialog at the moment it should be said on the film, so you can pause for a second if you’re out of sync. Beware — the syncing process can lead to arguments amongst video watchers: “No, just pause the film for a second!” “No way, it’s the Rifftrax that’s off, pause that!” “Oh great, now it’s totally screwed up…” and so forth. Luckily, they have their own RiffTrax Player that will do all the work for you, if you’re watching the DVD on a PC (dammit).

I’ve seen Raiders of the Lost Ark, 300, and The Matrix so far, and 300 was definitely my favorite. There are over 50 titles available and they cost between $1.99-3.99, and it’s absolutely worth the money to breathe new life into some of these films.
