As if one book club wasn’t enough, I’ve joined forces with some of my fantastically geeky girlfriends (Felicia Day, Kiala Kazebee, and Bonnie Burton) for a little project called the Vaginal Fantasy Hangout. This new monthly Google+ hangout session will focus on books from the fantasy, science fiction, paranormal romance, and mystery genres. There will also probably be a little sexy-time (as I like to call it) in the stories as well, which we will discuss to great lengths (and to our great amusement).

Our first episode is up, and we also have a Goodreads group and a Facebook page! Hope you’ll join us! Next episode will tape live on Feb 27th at 8pm PST over on Felicia’s G+ page.

Game of Thrones Opening – Metal Edition

How awesome is this cover of the Game of Thrones opening music? It was done by a sound designer, Roger Lima, and posted on his website WhiteNoise Lab. I think it really emphasizes the brutal undertones of the series and it also gives me MAJOR CHILLS every time I hear it! Nice work! \m/ \m/

How much are you loving the show so far? I made a little tribute to Hodor today on Twitter, and the actor (Kristian Nairn) liked it! Kind of made my week.

Playing The Go Game

Despite the cold and the rain (check out my awesome rain boots, huh?) I set out to visit the HQ for the Go Game, a company that specializes in creating team building events and get-togethers. From their website:

The Go Game stages technology-fueled, creative games and activities for team building, marketing programs, sales training and just pure fun. Based in San Francisco, we stage unique, interactive events and scavenger hunts for groups of 3 to 10,000 players anywhere in the world

Joined by some of my friends, including my endlessly patient partner-in-crime Ryan Block, we traveled around the Mission district of San Francisco, completing quests and finding clues. Check out the video to see who was victorious!

Remember I mentioned that I was recording voice over for an upcoming game? I’m excited to say that I’ll be voicing not one… not two… but three characters (not all human) in the upcoming DLC for Fallout: New Vegas Old World Blues! There will be many more details coming in the next episode of Qore, hopefully out next week, including the names and descriptions of all the characters I’m voicing (none of them are named Felicia… sorry everyone!).

Anyhow, I really excited about it! The whole experience of recording voices for actual characters (and not just being myself) was totally new to me, and I loved it. Thanks especially to Jason Bergman from Bethesda, who helped to set the whole thing up! It’s safe to say that this truly is a dream come true for me.

And no, I don’t have any secret insider info on when the PSN situation will be resolved, but hopefully it’s soon!

Chiptunes with 8-Bit Band ‘The Glowing Stars’

The Glowing Stars are a relatively new band in the 8-bit scene, but they’ve already played a huge show with Anamanaguchi and Peelander-Z at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco! Oh, and they totally rocked it, too. In this episode of Tech Unexpected, I went down to their practice space to talk to them about how they create their video game-inspired tracks, and we even get some samples from Terry Cruze to make a brand new piece of music!

3D Laser Backpack at UC Berkeley

Professor Avideh Zakhor and her team at UC Berkeley have created an incredible backpack that creates 3D models of the space it’s in, using multiple lasers and cameras. This has really far-reaching uses, including video games, augmented reality, and interior modeling and design. Check out her page for more info.

Fun with geocaching!

My life has become consumed by a new hobby lately, and it’s called geocaching. In my latest Tech Unexpected video, I get a lesson from Lee Van Der Bokke, who has found more geocaches (over 50,000!) than anyone else in the world.

Another year, another SXSW Interactive! This is probably my busiest SXSW ever, but here’s a rundown of the events and companies I’ll be covering for Cruzearati:

ScreenBurn
SXSW ScreenBurn is the video game element of the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive festival that merges the new media, music, film and video game industries all in one place. ScreenBurn connects independent developers, publishers, consumers, digital media professionals, and internet trend-setters and taste-makers from all around the world who attend SXSW.

SXSW Accelerator
A live audience, as well as a panel of expert judges will discover advancements in music related technologies. The best part? Product demonstrations by the most ambitious talents in the world with the most creative new ideas to change it. Two new books to check out

Two people whose opinions and thoughts I value very highly have just released new books, and they’re doozies! Gary Vaynerchuk and Jane McGonigal write about very different subject matters; Gary talks about how you can take advantage of the current economy and new ways of reaching your audience to plant the seeds for your own success, while Jane explains that video games can actually help to make us better, more well rounded people, and possibly even change the world. In a good way, not the “we’re all going to turn into giant couch slugs with violent dispositions” kind of way.

LG Speed Texting World Cup

On one of my recent NYC trips, I drove over to Gotham Hall to watch the LG Speed Texting World Cup! I consider myself a pretty fast typer on the iPhone ( bad autocorrects and all) but these competitors blow everyone out of the water. I say they have an advantage using phones with keyboards, but I’m biased.

Getting a look at the Looxcie

There’s no shortage of ways to capture video clips these days: smart phones, Flip cameras, dSLRs… they can all take good quality video that can easily be uploaded to YouTube or Facebook to share with your friends and family. The downside? It’s an active process. You have to concentrate on getting the shot you want, instead of actually enjoying the moment you’re trying to capture.

On this episode of Tech Unexpected, I take a look at the Looxcie Wearable Camcorder. It sits on your ear like a Bluetooth headset (which technically, it is), and you can use your iPhone or Android device as a remote control to record and play the videos, and to trim the clips and send them off into the Internet aether once you’re done.

Is this something you would want to use? What would you use it to capture? I can also see it being very useful to record concerts or sporting events. At $199, is this something you would integrate into your tech collection?

A few weeks ago, I “cruzed” on down (sorry, it was too easy to pass up) to Menlo Park to visit TechShop, an awesome space where inventors and innovators come together to cook up some really great ideas. You know how everyone whines about it being the future, and “where is my jetpack?” and all that? Well, we got your jetpack right here, baby!

Your new Tech Cruze-arati!

I’ve had a few new projects pop up recently, but this is one that I’ve really been excited about! Chevrolet has invited me to be a part of the Cruze-arati campaign; they’ve invited experts from many fields (like fashion, sports, travel, music and entertainment) to use the new Chevy Cruze and shoot videos about the topics they love. I’m happy to announce that I’ll be their Tech Cruze-arati, and we’ve already shot some great technology segments during the past few months!

Just to be clear, Chevrolet is paying me to shoot the episodes (full disclosure and whatnot!), but the segments we’ve shot so far are very much in the vein of my other projects: we’ll drive and travel all over the country, meeting awesome people in the tech industry, reviewing some hot new gadgets, and heading to conferences that are highlighting everything cool the tech industry has to offer.

‘The Trashmaster’ brings machinima to the next level

I’ve seen a lot of good machinima (yes, I just admitted that) but this one really takes the cake. From Gamesradar:

Clocking in at 88-minutes, The Trashmaster took the french filmmaker over two years to create. It pairs GTA IV’s engine and assets with Weschler’s talented eye for cinematography to tell the dark tale of a trash collector who moonlights as a self-appointed ‘cleaner-upper’ of the ‘human trash’ of New York. When a particularly trashy serial killer starts targeting girls from his favorite strip club… well… you can watch the movie for yourself to find out how it all plays out.

Some of the lines are a little wonky, but that could have been dialog somewhat lost in translation from French. It’s just pretty mind-boggling to see what’s possible with a lot of patience and (obviously) talent. It made me want to pick up GTA IV again; it’s been a while since I’ve spent some quality time with Niko.
